Sandakan Scholarship Program
The Sandakan “Best You Can Be” Scholarship 2011/2012 provides leadership, community contribution, social inclusion and physical & mental wellbeing development opportunities for young people aged 16-18 in the Brighton Municipality.
The challenge offers participants a unique opportunity to develop life skills such as discipline, tolerance, self-worth, team work, purpose and leadership. This will be done through focus on a contribution to community as well as healthy lifestyles, leadership development and fitness training, along with an element of historic research.
The scholarship winners will work together to develop the above skills, conduct fundraising and prepare for a physical and mentally demanding challenge culminating in a trek to retrace the footsteps of our fallen soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country on the Sandakan Death Marches. The group will travel to Borneo in March 2012 to participate in this gruelling trek.
Participants will be matched with adult mentors to assist them in their preparation and to accompany them on the trek in 2012.
